Kathrin is Named Outstanding New Researcher

The Scientific Foundation Board of the RCGP and the Society for Academic Primary Care are delighted to announce that the Second Annual Yvonne Carter Award for Outstanding New Researcher has been won by Dr Kathrin Cresswell.

Dr Cresswell is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Population Health Sciences at The University of Edinburgh. She has carried out research evaluating the NHS Care Record and the effectiveness of ePrescribing  systems in primary care. She plans to use the award to present at an International Informatics Conference later in 2012.

The award commemorates Professor Yvonne Carter CBE for her contribution to primary care research.  It is presented jointly by the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP), through its Scientific Foundation Board, and the Society for Academic Primary Care (SAPC) to nurture the capacity of academic primary care to conduct the highest quality research by looking for a researcher who has the potential to become a future research 'star'.

Dr Clare Gerada, RCGP Chair of Council, said: “I am delighted that Dr Kathrin Cresswell has been selected to receive the second annual Yvonne Carter Award for Outstanding New Researcher. The awards panel were unanimous in this decision. Kathrin’s commitment to Academic Primary Care, to pursuing high quality research and working in fields of direct relevance to patient care were particularly commended.”

Professor Helen Lester, Chair of SAPC, said: “We were particularly delighted that we had such a strong non medical field this year, including our eventual winner, since this reflects the reality of academic primary care - that is, the importance of non medical researchers in the development and successful prosecution of high quality research that has direct relevance to improving patient care.”

Dr Cresswell will be presented with her award at the RCGP Annual Primary Care Conference at the SECC in Glasgow 3-6 October www.rcgpannualconference.org.uk
